King and Alpine Valleys Wineries

The King and Alpine Valleys are situated in the foothills of the Victorian Alps to the south of Wangaratta. The area produces premium fruit for most varieties and is also becoming well known for its Italian varieties such as Barbera and Sangiovese. The climate in the Alpine Valley has hot summer days with cool nights which results in fine wine which cellars well. The climate in the King Valley ranges from high altitude cool to gentle river flats mild and open plains with hotter conditions in the North.

The King Valley's cool climate gives our grapes a distinct character, which enhances these noble varieties. Established in 1981 Doug Groom (winemaker) makes each vintage a special one, with minimal intervention allowing the wine to show its natural merits.

John GehrigWine listJohn Gehrig is a fourth generation winemaker who comes from Victoria's oldest winemaking family, settling in the late 1850's at Barnawartha in North East Victoria. In 1976 John and Elizabeth Gehrig purchased 20 acres of land at Oxley in the King River and during that year established their first vines. Since 1976 John and Elizabeth have realised their ambitions. Cellar sales commenced in1981 and fourteen acres are now under vine, producing most of their grape requirements. Their modern family operated winery is designed for a 70 tonne grape crush.

With their passion for food and hospitality the intention is to develop wine styles particularly suited to food. Pizzini have planting's of the Italian varietals Sangoivese, Nebbiolo, Arneis, and Vernaccia. Interestingly, recently collected data has proven that the King Valley is indeed one of the best-suited regions in Australia for these native grapes.
