'Mt Samaria' Wines
Mt Samaria Vineyard is part of the Upper Goulburn Winegrowers Association which is one of Victoria's newest wine regions. The vineyard is owned by the Cowan family and managed by Judy and Roger Cowan. It is situated on the banks of the Broken River at Lima South. Plantings commenced in 1992, with the first vintage in 1996, and the first commercial wine release in 1999.
The Shiraz is a typical cool climate wine from an area with hot summer days but cooler evenings. As the harvest approaches, days are shorter and nights crisp, adding to the complexity of flavours. The wine is spicy and peppery with ripe berry charactersistics and subtle oak flavours as a result of maturation in French and American oak Barriques and Puncheons. The palate is smooth and rounded with good acid and fine tannins. Well cellared the wine should improve and drink well for 5-6 years.
The Cabernet Shiraz blend and the Shiraz made by Roger Cowan in 2002 are made from premium grapes, with 14.3% alcohol content, with hints of chocolate on the bouquet , excellent tannins and berry flavours with a lingering finish.
The first cintage of Tempranillo will be released in 2006. The grapes are handpicked and the vines hand pruned, helping to produce premium quality fruit.
Mt Samaria does not have cellar door sales but is open by appointment, the wines are also available at Phillips Cellars and Regional Wine Centre, online or in store.
